Traditional Worcestershire Sauce contains vinegar, molasses, high fructose corn syrup, anchovies, water, onions, salt, garlic, tamarind concentrate, cloves, natural flavorings and chili pepper extract.
Here are a few suggestions for a vegan substitute:
1. Use a vegan Worcestershire Sauce from Trader Joe’s, Annie’s, or sauces labeled Kosher.
2. Use balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, tamari, red wine, or Liquid Smoke.
3. Make your own!

1 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup dark molasses
1/4 cup soy sauce OR mushroom soy sauce
¼ cup tamarind concentrate, optional
1/4 cup water
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons dried mustard powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic granules
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves OR allspice
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
Yield: about 2 cups.
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Pour into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Store in refrigerator.
